Mesurer!

As a measurement activity, we used yarn to measure the length of our "pas de géants". We chose books of different sizes and estimated how many would fit in our "pas de géants". Many of our estimations were very close! Next we estimated the length compared to a metre stick and then measured it exactly.

Ask your child what measurement (mm, cm, m, or km) they would use to measure various things in your home or when you're out in the community to get them thinking!

Les jours des magasins!

On Friday and today we set up shops in our classroom to practice and apply some of our learning in social studies and math. In social studies we are learning about the different zones in our community (including la zone commerciale) while in math we have been adding and subtracting sums of money and learning about money value. Our students loved learning through play and took a lot of responsibility in their learning. They set up their stores, decided on prices and successfully carried out transactions. Even though some of the play cash registers had calculators, our students used their brains and had to show me their work! We had so much fun! Thank you to parents for allowing your children to bring in props!

We even had a spa!

Les fêtes!

As a social studies project, we recently watched a video of holidays around the world then invented our very own holidays. We had to include the name of our holiday, the reason for it and descriptions of the decorations, food and music. Our students were very creative! Below are a few of our holidays including Le jour de famille, Le jour de mode, Le jour de l'école and Le jour de viande!

Les correspondants!!

We received our first batch of letters from our pen pals in Newfoundland! Our class was so excited! They sent us an inflatable ball signed by all the pen pals and a post card. We later shared in a community circle what was our favourite thing that we learned about them. We are looking forward to receiving more letters!

Le roi c'est moi!

As a persuasive writing project, our class had to convince me who would make the best king or queen. It was extremely difficult to choose only one since everyone included some very convincing arguments! Some students talked about how they would respect and take care of others, make sure everyone is healthy or would know many languages so they could speak to everyone! Impressive!

Les suites de formes

Here we were using cubes to create addition patterns in shapes. We created  a figure and helped it grow by adding the same number each time.

Qu'est-ce que c'est?

We were exploring different aspects of the community. Each student wrote or drew their ideas surrounding their community and put them all together. They mentioned some really important parts of the community such as schools to learn, hospitals to help people, houses to live in, and stores to get food.

Les diagrammes à bandes

As part of our Data Management unit, we explored many types of graphs. Here we have one that a small group of students did. Once all small groups finished we had a "promenade de gallerie" where the students walk around with sticky notes and write what they liked best about their peers' final projects.

Casse-tête du Canada

As part of a Etudes sociales activity, we worked together to complete a Canada puzzle. It was covered in Canadian symbols, animals, food and sports that vary from province to province. We had a great discussion about what the students noticed on the puzzle/map and why they thought those images were there. We shared some of our personal experiences such as eating lobster or playing hockey.

Les lettres pour Terre-Neuve!

Our class is very lucky to have the opportunity to write to a grade 3 French Immersion class in St. John's, Newfoundland. Below are some of our first letters to our new friends! We have written them many times since then. Ask you child what they've learned about their new pen pals!

Les diagrammes de Venn

Here some students are organizing data into les diagrammes à Venn. They worked in groups and chose the information they would like to organize.
